No-Shows and Responsibility

Elo presented a training session last meeting on the Four Immutable Laws of Officiating. One of these is:
"Remember, it's their game, but your responsibility."

Now, he went into some detail on what that entails. But it's a good one to keep in mind the next time you experience no-shows. You know what that is... you suit up and head for the field for your assigned matches. You get to the field in plenty of time, even before the players. But, as you inspect the field and wait for the teams, it begins to occur to you that you are alone. The teams haven't shown up... and it's past kick off time!

There is a human urge at such times to simply head for the house. Please don't. Instead, if you can, find a phone and call the assignor. Make sure you are at the right field. If you are, or you can't reach the assignor, stay for your next game.

Staying for the next game when the teams for the previous game (or the previous two games) don't show is the professional thing to do. It's the responsible thing to do. It's their (the players') game; you are there for them, not the other way around.

Now, the good news. If you went to the right field at the right time, you will get paid. BASRA pays referees based on the Game Rosters they turn in. Show up for your assignments and you will be paid, even if the teams don't make it.

Now there's a good deal for you. Act professionally, be responsible... and get paid!
